Abstract

Through the social and spiritual formation, the female body creates a cultural form with both exterior and interior characteristics. The body becomes the carrier and the medium among the subjects in the society. With the time processing, we can examine our body transformation and think about the different ways of thinking in order to discover the new vision between the body and the structure of society.
Nowadays, in the changing world of the new media era, women’s positions are also changing, and female body has to play more roles. The body somehow reflects the astaticism of social categorization and the orientation of the transformation.
This Research is trying to figure out the image of female body through new media art. In addition, it is also discussing the limitation of the body and the social formation in order to reflect the roles of female and the frame which carried by the body.

Abstract

In Simians, Cyborgs and Women: The Reinvention of Nature (1991), Donna Haraway suggests a new phenomenon, created by machines, that technology has diluted the distance between organic and non-organic; flesh and cyborgs.  Inspired by Haraway, I see cyborgs as the objects that combine two contradictory elements: nature/body, artificial/machine, mind and inner-developing/metal and externally designed.  Women artists have created art which responds to the concepts of Haraway’s concepts of cyborgs and body and the phenomenon of the cyber world.  Through presenting contemporary visual art via technology, some artists select ‘body’ to debate the patriarchal norms and to respond to the current technology-led society.
In this paper, I investigate the relationship between technology and women by exploring Donna Haraway’s concepts of cyborgs, Sadie Plant’s arguments of ‘zeros and ones’, and relating the story of Ada Lovelace and her discovery of the significant link between weaving technology and computer science.  A new binary order established via technology will be demonstrated with a comparison of the binary relationship in gender and the exploration of some women artists’ works.  In this paper, I will focus on  how women artists visualise their imagination of cyborgs and body by specifically investigating Phil Sayers and Rikke Lundgreen’s project, Changing Places (2007-2008), Johanna Hӓllsten’s Whispers (2001-present) and Chou Wenli’s OM series (2005-present).
